The Stirling Council Branch of UNISON came into being in 1996 when the new council was created from the merging of the District and the Regional councils. Since that time UNISON has been actively involved in negotiating terms and conditions, fighting redundancies, representing members at Grievances, Disciplinaries, Guidance and Support meetings, Single Status and Equal Pay negotiations.
We meet monthly via Branch Executives and Finance and General Purposes meetings, where Stewards and Branch Officers feedback, discuss and vote on a whole range of issues that affect the Branch and it’s members. UNISON Branch officers and Stewards are also present at service/council wide Bipartites, Tripartites , Health and Safety Forum meetings. Members are encouraged to attend our Annual General Meeting, where they can have their say and vote on the running of the Branch and any other current issues.
Each year, UNISON holds it’s National Delegate Conference where delegates will set the union’s policy and campaigning agenda for the coming year. The Stirling Council Branch AGM decides who represents this Branch at Conference. We also send delegates to the Scottish Local Government Conference and participate in the Scottish Local Government Committee.
UNISON itself was formed on the 1st of June 1993, when NALGO, NUPE and COHSE merged to form the biggest union in the UK. At the last count, UNISON had a membership of about 1.3 million members – these are people who work in the public sector, providing public services and utilities.
We are a member led Trade Union – we are not a national insurance scheme. This branch would not exist if there were no members willing to play their part and support one another in each other’s struggles. It is only by working together that we can achieve successful outcomes for all our members.
